School SummaryWalt Whitman Middle School, an International Baccalaureate© World School since 2003, opened in 1961 with an enrollment of 1,066 at the site on Old Mount Vernon Road, now Mount Vernon High School. In fall 1973, Whitman moved to its Richmond Highway location, which in the 18th century had been the Potomac Path, created to serve the Potomac plantations. With the closing of Fort Hunt High School and the merger of Stephen Foster and Bryant Intermediate Schools in 1985, Whitman moved to its present location. This relocation placed Whitman out of its community boundaries, requiring all students to ride buses.
Although boundaries and school sites have changed over the years, the goal of all programming and instruction is to meet the needs of the child in the middle. Whitman, a notably diverse school, embraces many innovative programs, practices, and systems to provide all students with the tools, knowledge and dispositions needed to find success as they continue their educational journey. Some of these program and personnel supports include dedicated special education teachers for students with individualized education plans (IEPs), specialized English language learning courses led by experienced ESOL teachers, an Advanced Academics Resource Teacher (AART) who guides the Young Scholars program, the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program, the use of technology platforms Lexia and iXL for reading and math skills practice, and a robust After School Program available every school day.
Whitman prepares its students through a balanced, structured curriculum that meets all students where they are and inspires them to grow academically, emotionally and socially. Whitman Middle School encourages parent and community partners and strongly supports the Parent Teacher Association (PTA).
