School Summary

Herndon Middle School is a caring community which serves students in grades seven and eight from Herndon and Reston. Staff members are committed to providing a safe, nurturing and rigorous learning environment for all learners. Students are encouraged to grow academically, develop socially, make appropriate choices, and accept responsibility for their decisions. The staff works to build relationships and foster a strong school culture that increases student motivation, confidence and work ethic. Teachers work together on teams to develop highly engaging lessons. Innovation and creative teaching approaches are supported by instructional coaches. Everyone at Herndon Middle School approaches each student according to their individual needs and our mission is to foster growth and achievement both academically and socially.

Herndon Middle School staff believes in challenging students to be creative and critical thinkers. The curriculum is differentiated according to the needs of all our students and,clear expectations, adequate scaffolding, and multiple opportunities for students to practice content and learn the curriculum are provided as needed.

Herndon teachers use technology and facilitate a variety of learning experiences for students. Enhanced services are offered for gifted and talented students, students with learning disabilities, students with physical disabilities, and English Learners (ELs). Herndon is a Comprehensive Services Site and additional resources are available to support students with emotional disabilities and specific social and behavioral needs.

Herndon Middle School offers an extensive elective program. Students can begin their study of French or Spanish in a variety of settings, with the possibility of advancing to Level 2 in middle school. The band has performed at the state level and the drama and music departments collaborate on productions. Students can choose from such diverse offerings as art, exploring work and family roles, guitar, chorus, orchestra, computer solutions, band, reading, drama, technology education in the synergistic lab, and peer helping.

The school has strong parent and community support, offering several opportunities for parent connections and family involvement. Partnerships with Boeing and Capital One support our strong focus on STEAM opportunities for students.
