School Summary

School Summary

The engaging momentum of learning at Waples Mill is reflected through a positive environment that models literacy and numeracy for all students, staff, and families. Classrooms and hallways are filled with intrigue, curiosity, and a sense of exploration as teachers lead students to become authentic problem solvers in all areas of the curriculum. This high level of thinking has led to the achievement of our school receiving the Governor's Educational Excellence Award for schools meeting all state and federal achievement benchmarks for at least two consecutive years and achieving applicable excellence goals for elementary reading.

Our Elementary School is located on the crest of a hill on the original Waples Farm in Oakton, Virginia. Our school grounds are alive with learning as we focus on being stewards of our environment and promoting conservation. Walking the grounds of the school, you will see we are proud of our many habitats, birdhouses, and environmental learning areas.

STEAM at Waples Mill engages students through Project Based Learning to enhance knowledge of all areas of instruction through Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. Students are encouraged to become active decision-makers and problem-solvers who understand their connection to the world.

Waples Mill is a community school that nurtures and promotes students to set high expectations for academic achievement and develop lifelong skills for thinking and learning. The school includes programs for students in kindergarten through sixth grade and special programs for preschool students with disabilities. Inclusion in the general education of students in special education promotes sensitivity among staff members, students, and the community members regarding the unique needs and intrinsic value of children with a variety of physical and intellectual abilities.

Waples Mill is fortunate to have an educated and diverse staff which includes many specialists who provide innovative instruction in Advanced Academics, English as a Second Language, Reading/Writing, Spanish, Music, and Physical Fitness.

The PTA is a true partner with the school; thousands of volunteer hours are dedicated to providing extra hands and supporting a wide variety of initiatives to promote a student's journey through learning. Students, parents, and faculty work hand-in-hand to build an environment that facilitates excellence in academic achievement, appreciation for the arts, and respect for ones' self and others.

Waples Mill is proud of its academic success and community support, as it continuously strives for excellence to enrich students' lives.
