School SummaryMcNair Elementary School unites staff, families, and the community in working to help all students Run with the Best! A hallmark of McNair is the staff's strong commitment to collaborate in order to help all students succeed. Teachers participate in biweekly CLT meetings to unpack state and county-wide standards, plan lessons, analyze student data, discuss best instructional practices, and customize instruction to meet the needs of all students. A large team of literacy, math, Special Education, and English as Second Language specialists routinely plan and co-teach with classroom teachers. We have implemented a guided reading and math workshop program with both an extensive reading resource room of leveled books and math resource room.
McNair offers the full range of advanced academic services, including school-based center classrooms beginning in third grade. A 40-unit computer lab that all students have access to in order to learn how to use computer programs, SmartBoard technology, document cameras, and wireless mobile laptops for each grade level, and computers in every classroom make state-of-the-art applications available to all children. McNair has a STEAM Lab, Computer Lab, and Strategies Lab with full-time facilitators to expose all of our learners to creative and critical thinking skills; as well as inquiry-based learning opportunities that directly align with Portrait of a Graduate.
McNair Elementary School opened its doors in September 2001. The school was named for the McNair family, members of the Herndon community since the 1700's. Located in a richly diverse community, McNair families represent over 50 countries and languages. McNair's own Parent Resource Center is conveniently located in our school and staffed by a part-time parent liaison. The Parent Resource Center offers parent coffees, informative workshops, and a welcoming introduction to families new to our school community. Working in partnership with our PTA, McNair empowers parents to be proactive in supporting their children's achievement through participation in many academically focused and social family events.
Our mascot is the mustang and we encourage our staff and students to model McNair Pride by showing respect to themselves, others, and property.
