School SummaryThe mission of Waynewood Elementary is to leave no child behind in its quest for academic excellence. Waynewood's instructional program focuses on a strong academic, foundation, critical thinking, problem-solving, character education and technology applications. The school community is committed to delivering instructional best practices and keeping the central focus on children.
Waynewood Elementary School, located along the Potomac River between historic Mount Vernon and Old Town Alexandria, serves as a focal point of the community. An extensive PTA volunteer program supports academics and provides cultural and enrichment opportunities for all students.
Waynewood staff members work together as a professional learning community (PLC). Teachers and specialists meet weekly in teams to analyze student data and plan for instruction. The school offers both multi-age and single grade classes for students in kindergarten through grade two. A school-based gifted and talented program is available for eligible students in grades three through six.
Through a combined effort between the school and PTA, Waynewood has three wireless mobile laptop carts that are used by students at all grade levels. There is a computer lab, as well as math software in every classroom that provides students with enrichment and remedial activities in all five strands of the Virginia SOLs. A SMARTBoard has enhanced instruction in the core curricular areas. Waynewood is committed to integrating technology throughout the curriculum, as students prepare for the future.
