School SummaryMount Vernon Woods Elementary School (MVWES) is a community school in every sense of the word! As such, the programs and activities within the school are all focused on how to support our students, our staff, and our community.
MVWES has been a staple of the community for over 50 years and has grown tremendously. The school currently has a fully equipped media center, more than twenty mobile labs, SMART Boards in all grade level classrooms, a gymnasium, an Art room, three music rooms, and a resource room with desk top computers. The school has continued to grow in enrollment resulting in additional instructional spaces. MVWES has a modular building with 12 additional classrooms and a duplex with two additional classrooms. MVWES is bursting at the seams and is currently deeply engaged in a much needed renovation.
MVWES has an enrollment of over 690 students. Diversity is celebrated with more than 30 languages spoken at MVWES. To support general education students in grades Kindergarten through sixth grade, MVWES has a variety of programs - English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Spanish - Foreign Language (FLES), Young Scholars, and an Advanced Academic Program, which includes Local Level IV classes in grades 3 through 6. These almost 700 students do not just include school-aged students however, MVWES also has Family and Early Childhood Education/Head Start (FECEP/HS) and Pre School Special Education classes.
However, MVWES also provides resources for the community outside of the school. With a full time Parent Liaison, a full time social worker and psychologist, as well as a base for Fairfax County Programs and Youth for Tomorrow to support individual students with needs, MVWES works to ensure that no member of our community has needs that are not met. This includes providing opportunities for the community to share its concerns with the Dr. Mitchell through the Principal's Advisory Council every month, organizing a Family Market for residents to shop for fresh foods and vegetables.
As we meet the current needs of students, MVWES also works to meet the future needs of students by focusing on Portrait of a Graduate skills and using the tenets of both Responsive Classroom and Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports to teach students how to collaborate, problem solve and value all contributions to the school community.
We are proud to be Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School Panthers!
