School SummaryOrmond Stone Middle School was named for Ormond Stone, professor of astronomy and mathematics at the University of Virginia. In his retirement, Stone was a resident of Centreville who promoted improvements in public education and helped establish Fairfax County's public library system. The school opened in 1991 with 700 students and in less than 10 years more than doubled in size. Since the opening of Liberty Middle School on the other side of Centreville, our enrollment has stabilized for the past few years at about 800 students.
Stone is structured as a Professional Learning Community rooted in the Middle School Concept, which means that teachers and administrative staff operate in collaborative teams committed to building a positive learning environment that promotes academic achievement, requires responsible interpersonal participation, and encourages exploration of the arts. Our school programs are designed to support students academically and emotionally as they make the transition from elementary to the high school grades.
As part of the Professional Learning Community initiative, Stone's faculty readopted its mission and vision statements in 2013. The mission is anchored in the belief of developing critical and creative thinkers today, innovators tomorrow. The vision of the school includes a staff development focus on best practice instruction, systematic proactive interventions, and a continuous improvement cycle rooted in the Plan, Do, Study, Act model. The success of the mission and vision is dependent upon the shared decision-making and commitments of the total school community. Therefore, students, parents and staff at Stone Middle School work cooperatively to prepare students for success in academics, essential life skills, and service to the community. Staff is committed to preparing students for the ever changing world by integrating technology and project based learning into the classroom.
Each new school year inevitably confronts us with challenges that could be daunting if it were not for the talent and commitment of Stone's faculty. Meeting the diverse needs of approximately 800 seventh and eighth graders keeps us busy, but never so busy that we are not available to assist students and parents with any concerns they may have. Please feel free to contact us as the need arises - our commitment is that we will respond promptly and work together to find solutions. We are proud of Stone Middle School, our students, and our Centreville community, and we welcome you to visit us.
