School SummaryThe "Other People Matter Mindset¿ is a visible part of what makes Lemon Road a great place to work, learn, play, and grow. Lemon Road Elementary School is nestled between McLean and Falls Church, Virginia, a neighborhood rich in historical importance dating back to the early days of the Colonies.
When Lemon Road opened on January 6, 1956, it was a small walking school. While Lemon Road has grown in size, it maintains its small neighborhood charm. Building on traditions and high expectations, staff members are committed to implementing a student-centered curriculum to foster student achievement. We recognize the importance of relationships on learning, and intentionally employ strategies to extend the time students, teachers, and families are engaged in the learning process. We are committed to implementing Best Practices for teaching and learning and routinely review and alter our practices as we study their impact on student learning.
Differentiation, guided by data-based decision making, has been a school focus as staff members strive to meet the instructional needs of a very diverse population. We set the bar high at Lemon Road and routinely tailor instruction so that all students can engage in a rigorous, challenging curriculum. To that end, our teachers participate in staff development and team collaboration efforts to bolster their repertoire of instructional techniques.
We want our students to not only be participants, but also leaders in the 21st century. Since 2016, Lemon Road has been a Partner School with the Positivity Project, which is "dedicated to empower America's youth to build positive relationships and to understand, appreciate, and exemplify the character strengths in us all." The 24 universal character strengths are an intrinsic part of each us, existing across all cultures and all time periods throughout history. Making children aware that everyone has all 24 character strengths, provides the foundation for self-confidence and helps children better understand how to appreciate the differences in each of us. We believe that armed with a deeper understanding of the 'Other People Matter' mindset, we will create students who will enhance our school community.
In addition to The Positivity Project, Lemon Road students address the Portrait of a Graduate attributes of communicator, collaborator, critical and creative thinker, goal-directed and resilient individual, and ethical and global citizen through Project Based Learning and out outdoor education program. Project Based Learning introduces students to an open-ended driving question that requires students learn about a topic through inquiry and innovation. Students have choice in their final project options, they refine their project frequently throughout the process, and they present their project to a large audience when complete. Lemon Road has an outdoor educator who supports all students and teachers with science instruction based on our beautiful school grounds. We are fortunate to have partnered with Battelle to provide us additional financial resources to support hands-on student experiences and field trips centered around STEAM.
Lemon Road functions as a Professional Learning Community, committed to fostering a community of learners in which students, staff, and parents continually grow and learn together while striving for excellence. Core to our beliefs at Lemon Road, we celebrate the uniqueness of the individual and value the family as an integral part of a student's academic success. Lemon Road is dedicated to providing an engaging learning experience to our students, as we prepare them to be leaders in the 21st century.
