School SummaryThe Luther Jackson Middle School community is committed to providing academic excellence in a safe and positive environment where diversity is respected and all students feel invited and expected to become active participants in their own academic, social, and creative growth. With "Great Expectations, Endless Possibilities" serving as a guiding theme, all students are held to high academic and social standards, while also being provided with meaningful supports, to achieve whatever they dream.
Jackson embraces the middle school philosophy to guide its instructional and physical organization. Teams consisting of 3 core teachers (English, Science and Social Studies), instruct and guide a group of approximately 140 students through the school year. The classrooms of each team are located as close together as possible, with every effort made to place lockers within that same area of the building. Each team has a counselor who is closely involved in weekly team meetings and parent conferences. The Student Services staff created lessons and activities that support student academic learning as well provide students with strategies for handling the many challenges of today's world, such as bullying, gangs, and substance abuse. An embedded intervention and support 8th period provides extended time and academic assistance for students who need it as well as enrichment opportunities for students who have demonstrated satisfactory mastery of content, knowledge and skills.
Staff members provide expertise in a wide variety of academic courses, including advanced academic classes, Spanish, French and Chinese high school courses, Algebra, Algebra 2, Geometry, SOL support classes and advanced fine arts programs. Students are engaged in technology within classroom instructional time, library research, keyboarding and computer solutions classes, and formal and informal assessment projects. Teachers use technology for instruction, management, and communication. FCPS 24-7 Learning (blackboard) provides timely information regarding student work that parents can access from home computers. eCART (electronic curriculum assessment resource tool) will provide teachers access to web-based FCPS approved curriculum assessment tools and resources that support the program of studies (POS).
The teachers and staff members strive to deliver an instructional program of the highest quality to all of the students at Jackson. They actively pursue coursework and attend in-service activities outside the workday in order to have the most current and appropriate strategies for students. Their efforts are recognized and supported by parents of our students and by members of the community. With over 60 different countries represented as well as over 45 different languages. Jackson represents a global community and the future of the world.
