School Summary

Stratford Landing is currently undergoing a twenty-five, million dollar renovation and addition, set to be complete in the Spring of 2018.  We are located in Alexandria between Old Town and Mt. Vernon, near the Potomac River and the majestic George Washington Parkway.  Many of our students bike and walk to school from the surrounding single-family subdivisions.  Our historic setting provides our school with a rich, diverse community of learners.  Our proximity to Fort Belvoir and Washington, DC, makes Stratford Landing the perfect home for many military families.  We are proud to have an active Military Family Support Group, at our school.

Our diverse community also is home to students from the historical community of Gum Springs.  It is the oldest African American Community in Fairfax County, formerly established in 1833. West Ford, a former slave, founded the community after being freed by George Washington.  Located close to the Mount Vernon Estate, the community was a sanctuary for freedmen and runaways. Samuel Taylor, a runaway slave established the first institution in Gum Springs. https://www.virginia.org/listings/culturalheritage/gumspringshistoricalsocietyandmuseum/ . Our school enjoys a strong partnership with the Gum Springs Community Center.  As a Level IV Advanced Academic Center (AAP), Stratford is home to students from the neighborhood and from seven neighboring elementary schools that join the AAP program in grades 3-6.

Stratford Landing is a Responsive Classroom (RC) approach school.  Responsive Classroom emphasizes academic, social, and emotional growth in a strong school community. We believe that how children learn is as important as what they learn, and that academic success is tied to building social-emotional competencies. The research-based way of teaching provides practical strategies that raise educators' competencies in four critical domains:

  • Offering engaging academics
  • Building a positive community
  • Effectively managing the classroom
  • Matching instruction to students' developmental strengths and needs

At Stratford Landing every staff member embraces the growth mindset philosophy and weaves this into daily learning experiences for students.  All learning is based on the Portrait of a Graduate framework where we are preparing our students to be:

  • excellent communicators
  • collaborators,
  • ethical & global citizens
  • creative and critical thinkers
  • goal-directed and resilient individuals

Students experience strong instruction daily through differentiated & small group instruction, Project-Based Learning (PBL), technology (Google Classroom, Google Apps for Education, and iPad educational apps) and many more research-based resources and approaches to engaging learners.  Stratford Landing also has a strong social media presence on Twitter, @StratfordLndgES.

Stratford Landing is fortunate to have a supportive parent community.  An active PTA supports the instructional programs, professional development, classroom materials, technology, field trips and other various programs.
