School Summary

Herndon Middle School is a caring community which serves students in grades seven and eight from Herndon and Reston. Students and their families come from over 45 countries, speaking more 47 languages. Staff members are committed to providing a gifted-quality education to all students-regardless of income, ethnicity, race, or educational designation.

Herndon Middle School staff believes that all students can learn in a rigorous setting. Everyone at Herndon Middle School approaches each student according to their individual needs and our mission is to foster growth and achievement both academically and socially. Our school is unified in promoting a positive and responsive school culture through our P2 and PBIS programs. Teachers work together collaboratively in Professional Learning Communities to develop highly engaging lessons designed to meet all students' needs. Data is used to inform instruction and to meet the high standards and expectations necessary for student achievement. We focus on promoting literacy through writing in every classroom and exploring themes in literature together through our common read aloud sessions during Unity Time.

Herndon teachers use technology and to incorporate blended learning activities across all content areas. Enhanced services are offered for students in Advanced Academics classes, students with learning disabilities, students with physical disabilities, and English Learners (ELs). Herndon is a Comprehensive Services Site and additional resources are available to support students with emotional disabilities and specific social and behavioral needs.

Herndon Middle School offers an extensive elective program. Students can begin their study of French or Spanish in a variety of settings, with the possibility of advancing to Level 2 in middle school. The band has performed at the state level and the drama and music departments collaborate on productions. Students can choose from such diverse offerings as art, exploring work and family roles, guitar, chorus, orchestra, computer solutions, coding, band, drama, theater tech, and technology education in the synergistic lab.

Our school has strong parent and community support, offering opportunities for family involvement and service. Partnerships with Boeing and Capital One help support our focus on STEAM and promotion of the use of technology.
